President: Roger L. (Chip) Mitchell
Roger L. "Chip" Mitchell has been President of the Bettye Reed Scholarship
Foundation since its inception. Chip, a cousin of Bettye Reed, was
instrumental in the formation of this scholarship foundation. Having
spent many years in educational fundraising, Chip has offered a keen
insight in laying the groundwork to build this foundation from the
ground up.
Chip holds degrees from Shorter University in Church
Music and Music Education, and holds his Masters degree
in Business Administration. He has taught in the Floyd County School
System as well held the position of Minister of Music at various
churches in the Greater Rome area. Chip served in many roles in the Alumni and Development Offices at
Shorter University including oversight of the Alumni Office, the Annual Fund, and all aspects of Advancement Services. Currently Chip is the owner/administrator of ComForcare Senior Services of Northwest Georgia which provides non-medical home care primarily to seniors with the mission to improve his clients' quality of life and level of independence.
He is a resident of Rome where he
resides with his wife Anne Marie and his two twin boys Raleigh and Samuel.
Vice-President: Alfred R. Mitchell
Alfred R.
Mitchell, a native Roman, holds the position of Vice President of the
Bettye Reed Scholarship Foundation Inc. Al, a close cousin of Bettye
Reed, has played a vital role in the formation and administration of
the foundation.
Mitchell began his education at Model Elementary School before his family moved to Summerville, GA during the middle of his 6th Grade year. Al graduated from Summerville High School with the Class of 1957. An interest in electronics led Al to obtain an Associates Degree in Electronics Technology from United Electronics Laboratory in 1960. In addition to his degrees, Mitchell acquired an amateur radio license in 1958 that he still holds to this day.
Al began a lifelong career in two-way radio repair and engineering in 1962 when he opened his first business in Summerville called Communications Engineering Company. Mitchell operated this business, which served all of Northwest Georgia until the death of his father in 1967. At that point, he and his family moved back to Rome where he went to work as a Tech/Installer at Rome Mobile Radio Service. Al kept that position until he bought the company in 1976. At that time, the name changed to Coosa Valley Communications, Inc and remains to this day as a major player in NWGA two-way radio sales and service.
Al retired from Coosa Valley Communications in 2003 after over 40 years in the radio business. Al is married to Jeanne Whitehead of Rome and has one son, Chip. In his retirement, Al has found pleasure in remodeling both his son's and his own homes. Al and his family are members of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Rome.
Secretary & Treasurer: Robert T. Masters
Robert T. Masters serves as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Bettye Reed Scholarship Foundation Inc. Rob has been in banking for 20+ years serving as a Vice President and Trust Officer at River City, SunTrust , Regions, and First Union banks. Rob has proactively worked with clients to help them define their financial goals and objectives using financial planning to analyze their financial resources and develop plans to meet their future needs using investments, estate planning and traditional banking products such as credit and deposits.
Rob is a 1987 graduate of Shorter College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a Major in Accounting. Rob has also completed programs at the Southern Trust School, Georgia Banking School, and the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. In addition to the Bettye Reed Scholarship Foundation, Rob serves on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club, the Floyd County Schools School Governance Committee, the Coosa High School School Council, and the Shorter University Board of Visitors.
Rob resides in the Coosa community with his wife and three children.
